Good morning, Stave: I can't remember if I have actually introduced myself to this list or not. I am Dave Evans (dke), and first wandered ashore with my wife, Renate, on Roatan Island back in 1961, 40 years ago come June.. I was a graduate student at UC Berkeley at the time in Anthropology. We returned in 1964-65, and lived at French Harbour. During that stay we had Mr Wilson Arch, of French Key, build us a 22 foot topsail cutter, and eventually reached Miami and later my hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, where we promptly (but reluctantly) traded in our boat to my brother for a new 1965 VW Beetle which we drove back to Berkeley, wrote the Ph.D. thesis, and then drove it back to our first and last job a Wake Forest University. I say last job because I retired from teaching after 33 years in September of "99 to become full-time Director of the Overseas Research Center (ORC) on Roatan Island. All these years we have been taking students and faculty to Roatan, and hope to for years in the future. For more info. on the ORC and the work we do there with students and teachers from Middle School through High School, University, and Graduate School and beyond, please see our web site at
Renate and I will be back on Roatan on the 27th of this month to begin the slow process of switching from total dependency on the island's RECO energy grid to solar power. If there are any teachers or students out there interested in our offerings, please feel free to contact me at any time. Our goals are spelled out in our website, but let me just say here that "Making Money" is NOT high on our list of future goals! All the best, dke ==================== Please visit us at our Overseas Research Center Roatan Island Website http://www.wfu.edu/~dkevans |
