There are rarely any sand flies on the coast of Quintana Roo. I have ever gotten a good explanation as to why the difference, perhaps it has to do with the coral sands there. There are sand flies in Belize and they can be every bit as bad as the Bay Islands. By the way, they are sad FLIES not fleas. They are also called no see-ums in many of the other islands. We have them to some extent in the states also. I had a horse in Corpus Christi go completely bald due to an allergy to sand flies, although I don't recall them bothering me at the time. -----Original Message----- From: Bob Boesel Date: Friday, March 02, 2001 2:10 PM Subject: [Roatan] Another sand flea question
>We have spent many vacations on Cozumel including a lot of time on the undeveloped windward side. We have also visited many beaches in Quintana Roo from Isla Mujeres to Chetumal and never been bit by anything that we can recall. Two possible conclusions are that sand fleas choose not to inhabit Quintana Roo or that they choose not to bother us. > >A third conclusion is that we are so used to 10 lb. mosquitos (our state bird) and our swarming biting gnats that we simply didn't notice the little buggers. > >Has anyone comparitive experience on Mexico and Roatan? > >Regards, Bob Boesel > >>
