    Hi Marsha.

I know you can rent horses on Roatan, but I'm not sure where you ride them.
Perhaps there will be someone else out there who can comment on this for
    you.

There is Carambola Botanical Gardens, a very nice place to spend a few
hours. Carambola Gardens (in Sandy Bay) offers visitors a chance to learn
about the island plantlife. Originally instituted to educate island school
children, Carambola Botanical Gardens has an informative self-guided nature
trail. We enjoyed watching numerous varieties of hummingbirds that seemed to
    follow us along.

For the more adventuresome, there are two other more lengthy hikes (within
the park) that will take you through jungle-like environs. Stay alert and
you will be treated to an array of new sights and sounds. One trail leads to
an iguana breeding wall. The other trail leads to the top of Carambola
Mountain. The breathtaking panoramic views from the top are worth the climb.
(Hint: Bring along some water to quench your thirst and don't forget your
    insect repellent.)

If you are interested in birds, you might enjoy Tropical Treasures Bird Park
(in Sandy Bay). Tropical Treasures houses a wonderful collection of
Parrots, Macaws and Toucans primarily native to Honduras and the Bay Islands
in a spacious park. You are welcome to wander on your own or with a guide.
Enjoy a cool beverage under the shade of the huge mango trees as resident
parrots, Pancho and Darling, entertain you with their antics. Its a fun
    place.

    Regards,

    Sue

Thanks one and all. We're just starting to explore this idea and are quite
excited about the possibility. We've been to Costa Rica once and Belize
twice. Had wonderful times each time we went. We also love to take a long
horseback ride through the jungle/mountains and looks for birds and learn
about the plants and such. Is there anyplace like that that someone can
    recommend?

    Thanks Ron.
I'm glad to hear your going again. I think you'll be surprised at the
changes. My sources tell me West End is growing. The Twisted Toucan has new
digs - bigger and better (or so I'm told). And, Ocean Divers is in the
process of relocating from their old place next to Sunset Inn, further 'up'
in West End, next door to the car rental place and across from Tyl's Dive.
(I'm 'antsy' to go again, unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my
control, we will not be heading to Roatan this winter. Maybe later om the
    year, if things work out.)
    ENJOY!!!
Marsha - You'll love Roatan and its people. And this Discussion List has
some great members . You are sure to find someone here who can answer your
    questions and/or concerns.
    Best regards,
    Sue

    For Marsha Tiemann,
If you are planning a trip to Roatan, you are going to absolutely love it.
My wife and I went for the first time last June (Sue Porubek gave me a
great travelogue which convinced us to go) and it is truly paradise. We
are going again this June because the island is spectacular and the people
are the greatest we have ever encountered anywhere. I have put together a
description of our trip, the place we stayed and the friends we made. Let
me know if you would like for me to send it to you and I'll be happy to do
    so.
