Hi list,
I've been gathering info on Roatan artists and here are the four leads I have. One is actually from Utila. It's below.
Best, Steve www.roatanet.com - Visitors' Guide to Roatan
1. I don't know about Roatan, but Ed Camp is a painter on Utila. Most of the murals on restaurants and retailers are his, as well as paintings.
2. Melvin is still carving in Sandy Bay. He seems to do the larger carvings on contract basis now.
Veronica sells her stuff at our resort [Bay Islands Beach Resort] once a week, and at COCOView another day. Her niche is embroidery, not paintings.
There is also a great local carver named Astel Raymond. His stuff is very primitive, and inexpensive. He works as a security guard with the resort, and has several pieces in our historic village. His moray eel sold immediately, but there is still a sailing ship, deer, and other pieces available.
His brother is a local bush doctor, and has a medicinal garden in the village. If anyone wants a lesson in herbal medicine, and wants to buy roots and herbs, he's the guy.
3. I Know of another - very good and fast at painting peoples faces and etc. In Oak Ridge. Paints on old boat baddles and etc. Some can be seen at Hole in the Wall Bob and Ronda's place. Don't know how you could get hold of her though. Used to run LaFeets Bed and Breakfast Oak Ridge.
4. BY FAR, the absolutely best artist on Roatan is Virginia Castillo. Fortunately for her, but at Roatan's substantial loss, she has opened a gallery in La Ceiba. She mostly does island scenes, watercolors, but also has her own line of post cards and note cards, with her artwork on the front. She also does something we dubbed "fabric paintings", which is a mixture of appliqué and other techniques. She also does batik - in the $1000 range for the larger pieces. She has gotten commissions from some of the nicer mainland hotels for artwork in their lobbies, rooms, etc. She is also an incredible person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Notice all the exclamation points. And even that is an understatement! We were fortunately to acquire some paintings before she was "somebody". I don't know art from ***, except for the phrase "I know what I like". Her stuff is very realistic, and she captures the essence and the spirit of the island people. She is enchanting, and an elegant lady, and I hope you have the privilege of meeting her some day.
