    Hi Kristin:
Lenard finally called tonight...he said to tell you you are paid through
    January
with TLC, and that he still doesn't know what to do about the grass, that
    maybe
you should bring up the subject with the Ashcrafts...his words..."Dey tell
    me
dat de don worry much bout de grass, just if it get too high they might cut
    some
off th top or sumptin...whatcha want I should do? Its high man. Maybe Miss
Kristin otta ask dem if dey not gonna take care of th yard?"
He said no one has fooled with the cistern lid anymore, and except for the
"bush" the place looks ok. He said you can tell where they broke in ..."took
    de
    glass out".

I discussed the possibility of putting up shutters. He agreed it "would be a
help", and that he would go this week end, then changed it to "tomorrow",
    and
have a look and see what would both look nice and do the job. He agrees what
    is
really needed is to hire someone to sit up on the porch. He said he wouldn't
want for the Ashcrafts to hire anyone..."cause dat's how there's som many
    inside
jobs", and he agreed to talk to some people and see if he couldn't find
    enough
people to "man the place all day when the Ashcrafts are away." By this, when
    I
asked him, he means that no one person might want to spend all day every day
    on
the porch as the one watchperson, but he thinks he could find enough people
    to
stay a few days each to protect the place. I asked him to get back with me
    on a
price for such protection from the TLC (genteelly reminding him that we
    would be
standing by anyone we posted on your property), and he said oh they would be
good people...not to worry, he would vouch for them. He then reminded me
    that I
have to send down money for my watchman, and again reminded me to tell you
    that
    you own for February now.
He seemed a little worried about the grass or rather the condition of the
    yard
around the property, and asked just before signing off if you would maybe do
something about it...maybe ask the Ashcrafts if they wouldn't want to chop
    the
yard. He said its really getting high now with all the rain

I plan to go down the last week of next month. Its just too expensive right
now...I couldn't find anything cheaper for a Sunday to Sunday direct flight
    under $1,100
because in order to make the flight out of Miami I would have to go down and
spend the night in the International Hotel, and that's just a little over
$200.00 for one. I am talking with Caribbean Electric about altering my
    power
systems, putting in a system where I can charge a battery pack off RECO when
    its
up, and have energy automatically come on when RECO fails. Then I will later
    buy
a 12kw diesel generator as a backup for the range and water distiller, and
eventually go, system by system, to solar energy panels and storage. This
    will
be the main reason for my trip down, that and to pay my insurance, etc.,
    etc.
Will only be down a week. Have decided to cash in my flyer points with
    USAIRWAYS
and since they are partners with American, I can fly all the way from N.C.
    to
SPS roundtrip on flyer points, just paying for the trip to and from the
    islands.
Renate refuses to go this way, has had lots of bad experiences in San Pedro,
    but
I tried reminding her that that was always with TACA...still refuses to go
unless its a direct Miami-Roatan flight, and I can't afford that right now!
    Say,
if you know of any students up your way interested in out three-week
ethnographic field school, please give them our website....I want to branch
    out
to other institutions so that when my contract runs out in the Fall of 2003
    with
WFU I won't have to renew it, and will have the ORC running as a small but
    fun
    business.
OK...Lenard's job....to size up and price shutters for you, and get info to
    me..

To find out costs of watchpersons for your house and get info. to me.

Your job, to decide whether you are going to speak to the Ashcrafts about at
least keeping the yard up or not, and get the info. to me.
To get February's check to Lenard's brother's account in Miami.

My job..to get my watchman's and RECO money to Lenard and to keep prodding
    you
    both.

All the best, and I am serious about other students you may know....dke
