    A long time back, before tourist, islanders always used coconut oil to
    keep sandflies from biting. As Kristin says, it drowns them and prevent
    bites to begin with, but as Sue points out, you might want to put on a
    good coat of SPF 30 to begin with. If not you will be crisp fried in no
    time flat. Old Islanders had no problem with this, since they weren't
    the sorts to lay out in the sun to begin with.
