First things first, where is your land? Is the road to it passable 12
months of the year? Have you been here in rainy season to be sure? With a
two wheel drive van full of guests? If not, fixing that road is step one.
Have seen folks bring thousands of dollars sports equipment then moive to
Port Royal where they can only be acesed by boat. This won't work. Neither
will being down a dirt road that is dangeroud when wet. Has taken us 5
years and 10's of thousanfds to have a road that is 12 month passable on
Roatan. We have to spend much more each year just to keep it that way.

Would it suceed? Or would anything succeed? You strike me as a reasonably
intelligent guy. It's simple. What does it cost to operate (this one kills
most of us since it costs wa-aaaay more here that you'd expect for water,
power, and upkeep). Will folks pay a price for what you offer that is
higher than what it costs to provide the service/goods? Most folks here on
Roatan are barely making it and/or on a fixed income. The locals most def.
have no $$. The expats here are some of the cheapest folks I've ever seen!
But what choice do they have? Most are retired and have no way to make an
    income here.

The biggest problem we had starting out here was figuring costs. They
change daily!!! Who knew we'd have to keep extras of everything not
available locally--whic is just about everything! We started out with $25
per night rooms and are now at $65. Give you a clue how far off we were on
costs to operate here based on our stateside ideas? And, BTW, I'm not stupid
either--have a biz degree and years of successful biz experience stateside.
Did no good here!!!! Only way to figure it out is get in the trenches and
dig out what it is all about.

    Roatan truism/joke told by all.

Ya want to come to Roatan and make a million? No problem! Just bring two
    million!

But boarding an animal would be different than tourists--LOL --or maybe not
as much so as some might think!

Funny thing is I've suggested someone put up a kennel here on this list and
others for years--is why I said check the archives for the responses from
folks back then. Most recently I thing I suggested this in the past year
    even under cbeachinn.....com.

Your answer today confuses me. Not tuff to do
Most short time visitors don't have pets. How could they keep animals and
not be here to feed them? Would be a business for those of us who live here
an do have pets to board I'd think. Shortimers who do have pets already
would have been forcede to hire a watchie guy or something. Or is my logic
    flawed??? LOL wouldn't surprise me!

Hang gliding? Are you a pro at this to teach others? Can you repair the
equipment yourself? Am bieng silly here asking this. I know you didn't
expect to find a hang gliding repair shop here or qualified instructor.
DUH! Honestly, I'd personally never try it here and be a customer. Winds
are VERY unpredictable on hilltops and jungle with rocks is everywhere to
fall into with no medical care for those who end up there. But I'm sure
there are drunk tourists who'd try anything. So it might work if you know
what you're doing. But it rains 3 months of the year non-stop. Might put a
bite in your profits since it rains in winter which is also high season for
    tourists/snowbirds to visit.

Again, why not invest some of that startup captial coming here and checking
around with lots of folks--LOL not just vacationing--a work trip. Wouldn't
you do that before you started a businesss anywhere else? There are some
things that you just can't get off the WWW--not many--I admit--but still
some. Practical experience and third world feedback are two of those
    things.

You ARE very right that Roatan is covered with failed white elephants. Best
way not to be one is to do your homework. Ya got 2 houses? Live in
one--rent the other--live here 6 months to a year and you'll know what will
or won't work all by yourself I'd bet. There's really no other way. the
owner of AKR does not write on this list. In fact, very few folks on this
island do write here to tell you what you'd actually need to know.

Most important. Don't even consider starting a business here if you don't
plan to be here to manage it personally. Everyone I've ever seen try it any
other way failed within a very short time.

    Thanks for the reply Sandy.
Sorry, I thought I pointed the question to those on the island. (weather:
full, part, or some,-timers) Have been to the island many times. We have 2
houses and 23 acres of land. Finding the space is not a problem. However, as
with so many other projects I have witnessed there, just because you build
it, it doesn't mean, 'they will come'.
I am seriously considering building a facility, and starting the business.
The purpose of my question, is to get feedback regarding the viability of
this type of endeavor. Lord knows, there are enough 'white elephants', of
various sizes and intentions on the island. I would not want to be credited
with building another one. Personally, I think it would float. The input of
those on this list would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    John B.
p.s. While we're at it, what about a hangliding facility? Once again, ideal
situation (road to top of 2nd highest peak on island, with almost vertical
    take off points).
