I think American Express Travelers Checks are accepted pretty much anywhere in Central America. I have had problems with Visa Travelers Checks in Costa Rica, where I live. American currency is an interesting problem here too. You sometimes have to arm wrestle people at the bank to get them to take decent looking American money, then they give you in return some of the rattiest looking, milldewed local currency you have ever seen.
