Dear Group,
OK, the subject line is tongue in cheek. I figure that many don't read these guidelines emails based on the messages I get.
As always, the guidelines are at: http://www.roatanet.com/maillist-guidelines.html but this isn't a definitive list. Use common sense as well.
A few to emphasize:
-Don't send attack messages to the list. I'm having trouble separating flames from opinions, so you guys will need to self-police or politely address the person you have a problem with directly. Someone who is an excellent mediator from the list told me yesterday, "The best way to respond to opinions you don't agree with is silence."
Most email programs have filters you can set up to actually have a particular person's email go straight to the trash and you never see it. Here are instructions for most email programs: http://netforbeginners.about.com/library/101/email/bl-filters.htm -Trim your messages. This seems to be especially an issue with people who have recently switched from AOL and are not used to the new email program. AOL cuts everything off from previous messages. If there is an 800 line shakespeare sonnet still attached, then trim it to just the part you are replying to: >To be or not to be...
There are lots of people on the list from Honduras and Roatan. Like all lists, 95+% don't post often, but they still have to download those long emails on a slow dialup.
-Conversely, if you are an AOL user, and are replying, you might want to paste in the little part you are replying to so we know what you are talking about.
-No onlist "Thank You's," "Ditto's," "I agree," or whatever that could be sent to one person. Those should go to the person directly, no matter whose side you are on. It's best to just never send those to the list, since I often find myself wondering, is this a thank you to the list, a person or...? I've been letting most of those pass, but they add nothing to most of the 750+ members' mailboxes, so those will be deleted in the future. To send a message to just one person, open the original email and copy the person's email address to a new message.
I've hesitated in running this like a real list, since there are a lot of new Internet users on here. On a typical, professional list, all messages that don't meet the guidelines are just deleted or sent back to the person.
-It's not a guideline, but if you suddenly stop getting emails, email me directly. Yahoo, Hondutel and certain other ISP's seem to occasionally have problems, so everyone using those email addresses goes into a bounce list where they don't receive mail. I restart all those periodically.
