Thanks all for your quick and informative posts. Given your advice, I will merely spring for the Amer Express. The fee is not unmanageable and if it facilities ease of cashing them, it sounds like a good 1% invested.
Second, thanks for the suggestion on the $20s and $10s. I would not have thought of that. Speaking of tired, wrinkled, bills - - I have been in Guatemala and Costa Rica and been given bills in change that you could see through. The next merchant gladly accepted them.
I will remember to bring those crisp green backs.
