    Hello Adrienne Larkin,

As far I know the had been a time when on Roatan there was an
extensive use on pesticedes. I donīt know how it is actually but i
    hope not anymore.

On the other hand the name "sandfly" is somehow irritating.
They donīt have to anything with sand. Probably they are called thsi
way because they are small as a sand grain of sand.

Sandflies are also called "noseeums" but scientists usually call them
    biting midges or ceratopogonidae.

They live and breed in any kind of vegetation and most species donīt
even bother humans or vertebrats at all. But there are some which do
and some of this kind live also on the Bay Islands.
They use any kind of small water puddle which you can find in any
tree, orchid, shrubbery or even at any building were the sun isnīt
drying the "puddle" off every day.

If you have a close look you will find that "the cleaned beaches" on
Roatan without any vegetation and without the natural vegetation of
the near mangroves and woods want have that much sandflies as you will
have somewhere in the center of the island.
At the Iguana Station on Utila, when sunset is coming the sandflies
are much more than at the beach or somewhere down in Utila Town.

As well on Guanaja people settled on Bonnaca Key: There is no
vegetation because every square meter is used for the houses at "the
venice of the caribbean sea" so no place for sand flies left.

But always remember: No Bugs means no Birds, No Monkeylala etc.
Off cause bugs especially the smaller ones are part of the food chain
which is important for beautiful Biodiversity of the tropics.

And i think this is the most important reason why we all feel that the
Bay Islands are beautiful place to stay!

    best regards
