    Hi Shan,

    The cell system is the same as the AT&T system in the US. Not the new GSM
    system they are switching to now, but the system they've been on for years.
    You might pick up an extra phone on ebay, like a Nokia 5000 series (5100?)
    that is from the ATT system and then have it reprogrammed in Honduras.

    The PROBLEM is that there is no CelTel office on Roatan now. People have
    been going to La Ceiba or San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa to get them
    reprogrammed with a number. There may be a provider coming to the island
    where you can rent a phone or purchase a phone that is already activated.

    Phones start at around $100. Per minute cost is about $.50. There are
    definitely some poor reception spots on Roatan, but most places you can find
    a signal, from the middle of the island West.

    If you hang out on this discussion list and ask occasionally, sometimes
    people will contact you with house sitting or reduced price rentals.
