Steve...I'm getting old...its been 42 years that Roatan has been a major part of our lives in my family. No, I have never heard of shark attacks during my time (since 1961). I do know of a student that got a nasty bite from a moray eel, and I knew an islander who got his heel badly bitten by "something" when he was walking in ankle deep water on the reef off French Harbour one evening in 1970 about where the Buccaneer Inn is now...reason, the underside of one's feet are much lighter than the tops, and as he walked along it possibly appeared to a fish flipping in and out of the shallow water and attracted something...I suspect a young barracuda, may have seen the flashings of white and thought it was attacking a fish. At any rate, it was a bad cut and got infected and caused a great deal of trouble for the individual. I also would not recommend walking on the reef at ANY time, but especially if you are wearing white tennis shoes as well. But, bottom line, in all my years of running in and out of the islands I have never heard of a shark attacking a person. All this really means, of course, is just what it says. I suspect sharks, like gold, is/are where you find them, but I also suspect that some areas of the world have far more shark attacks than usual and more some years than others. For some reason my state...North Carolina...had more this past summer than for many years in the past off the Outter Banks and some of our more southern beaches...and then...there is always New Jersey! All the best, dke Steve wrote:
