    Hi David,

    Real cell phones, like are in operation now on Roatan, first came into use
    in 2000 as far as I remember.

    There was an older system, run by Southwind, that used radio phones. The
    phones were around $500 and were motorola radio trunk phones, but didn't really use a cell type system. I remember
    quite a few people having those phones in 1996, but don't know how long
    before that they came into use. The coverage was limited. Around that same
    time, some people also bought satellite phones.
