Hi Juliet,
I didn't get a chance to take pictures, but yes I think they must breed in captivity, I don't know for sure. I saw them when we were walking back to the Sea Grape Plantation from West End. I can't remember the name of the place, but there are rooms for rent on the left before you get to Sea Grape and they have them in an enclosure there. They are to mule deer in the Northwest what the mini horse is to a quarter horse,.. and I mean double cute! Their eyes are larger , their faces shorter and more dished then "normal" deer.- The little buck came over to accept an offered handfull of grass and I was captivated. It would be wonderful if someone could start some kind of breeding program in a natural invironment. These were kept in a small pen on bare dirt. They were in good shape, but,....I'm sure they would appreciate a little more freedom.
