Hi,
You need to immediately consult your doctor about any drug side affects.
Here's an opinion from a non-doctor, so take with a Buick sized grain of salt: Doctors hear the word malaria and prescribe Larium, even for areas with the milder form of malaria. I've never caught it. It is compared to the flu, but still requires treatment(!!!). Most doctors aren't specialists in tropical medicine, and I suppose they think better safe than sorry. Prevention is definitely the key with Deep Woods Off, screened rooms and long pants at dusk and dawn.
In general, people don't take the pills for Roatan, although it is possible to catch malaria. It sounds like someone on the list knows someone who caught it recently.
It is the milder form. If people do take the preventive, they don't take Larium, since anecdotal evidence suggests there can be side effects. They take the quinine related preventive, which is chloroquine. It is also available in all pharmacies and some stores on Roatan.
You can try to drink tonic water as a preventative, but the last estimate I heard was you would need to drink around 100 glasses per day to have the equivalent of the amount of chloroquine you would receive in a weekly preventive dose. They did indeed drink a lot of tonic water during the building of the Panama Canal.
