Credit cards are not as widely used here -- but American Express Travelers
checks are pretty easy to get cashed--usually there is no fee, you just
mostly get Lempiras in change. Still, it's wise to ask the place you plan to
stay what their policy is on Travelers checks as they still take time to get
cleared in local banks. We take them in payment on bills here--most folks
will--and cash them into Lempiras or even dollars -- just in smaller amounts
if we have to cash for dollars.

Do NOT expect other types of travelers checks to be cashed here--some
are--some aren't. Stick with what works. American Express works. Also, is
wise to buy them is small $20 sizes since fewer folks have larger amounts of
change they are willing to part with for a check they'll have to hold for
while to turn into USA dollars or that "may" not be good in the first place.
Some tourists have used these checks and then reported them stolen--this is
why local folks here are a bit leery of them if they don't know you.
Grocery stores will take them-and most places to eat- but not all.

There is a cash machine--I guess that's what you mean--in Coxen Hole--but it
is NOT recommended to expect it to work properly--horror stories of multiple
withdrawals on statements when no money came out of the machine are all over
the place. DO NOT COUNT ON THIS.

Cell phones are used in some parts of the island, but there are still some
dead spots--West End/Bay has some dead spots--some spots up east end--some
odd spots where mountains just get in the way. Only Honduran programmed
phones will work here--you can't simply bring one from home and have it work
with the local cellular system. Check with places to stay about E-mail--is
cheaper and easier to get access to for international communications.

Many spots, including here, have kitchenettes available for cooking--we also
do a grocery store stop on the way in from the airport at Eldons--the BIG
grocery store. Should usually have what you need there if you're not too
    picky on brands and such.

    Hope this helps.

    My questions......

Do most rental places on roatan take credit cards and do they charge you
    extra to cash travellers cheques?
Is there a INTERAC machine on the island and where?

Can you use a cell phone from the island?

I know there are many folks renting homes, cabanas etc. We were looking
for midrange clean friendly accommodations where you could perhaps also
make coffee and lunch. Some of the houses look beautiful but for two
people are a bit too expensive.

Any suggestions/personal recommendations would be most appreciated!

Can you "cut and paste" these questions for me? Can't wait to get to
the sun....we had snow again this morning! Much thanks, Judi :-)
