Hello- My name is Patti Beaumont & I live in Sandy Bay area. I've been living on the island for about a year and 1/2. (If it helps to put a face to the name, I am Cam O'Brien's youngest daughter & am married to Bob who manages BIBR. I've got two kids, Katie (9) and Nick (10).)
OK- on to the important stuff: I have a few opportunities to offer people with school aged kids on Roatan.
First: As part of a school project, my daughter is starting a website for writers, poets and artists on Roatan to display their work. All work in english or spanish from kids 17 and under will be accepted and published online. Please email all submissions to me directly at islanddiscoveries.....com. If someone doesn't have email access, they can send it by the resort. I will try and organize some other places for drop offs in the next few weeks. Please ask the kids to include a short paragraph with age, school name (if they are in school), town, and anything else they want to share about themselves. If we get enough submissions, the kids are planning to make an online book (downloadable using Adobe Acrobat Reader) with everyone's work in it.
Second: Once again, I will be sponsoring a FIRST LEGO League Robotics Tournament. This year the theme is Visit to the Red Planet. We had two teams last year & had a great time! I provide the robots, most of the lego parts, the instruction and the team coaching. There is a fee for the competition materials which is split among the group (unless I can find a sponsor) Last year the fee was 250 lps per kid. I'll need to limit the teams to about 10-12 kids (6 kids each) again this year unless someone want to volunteer to sponsor a team. Check out the First LEGO League website for more information. http://www.firstlegoleague.org The kids need to be between the ages of 9-14 & be able to meet in Sandy Bay 2 times a week from September - November (we take a short break in mid- October). It helps if the kids have had some experience with computers, but it isn't necessary. Registration opens May 1st and will stay open until the teams are full.
Third: BIBR is sponsoring interns interested in teaching science in community & school settings on Roatan. We will have an intern here in May & early June who is available to give a free presentation about marine ecology to the schools (suggested ages 10-17). We are now requiring that all interns who come to the resort work with us to create fun, interactive presentations. Some of these presentations are designed for 3-6th graders and talk about basic science concepts. Others are about island ecology & environmental awareness. If you know of someone who might be interested in having the interns visit their school, church or groups, please ask them to email me directly at islanddiscoveries.....com
