Dengue is a flu-like virus. Typically only a problem for the old and young and sick (in this part of the world--I have NO IDEA about Micronesia)--like the other flu. We see it here rarely--but more often on the mainland. When we DO hear of it --again rarely-- it's during rainy winter months--not now. Cures vary--there actually isnt a real cure --like the flu--mostly the idea is to rest and avoid antibiotics which won't work anyway. The "normal" treatment here--if there can be such a thing--is to take a Valium and sleep off the 2 or 3 days of high fever and very uncomfy body aches. Roatan had a spraying program last year of all wet spots to keep the island safe. It must've worked 'cause I didn't hear anything about tourists getting it. And we DO listen for such and ask around.
Unlike the flu you're accustomed to, you don't get Dengue from another person--just from a skeeter bite. Sitting around letting mosquitoes bite you is NEVER a good idea--no matter where you are. So wear bug spray--and leave that area if you're getting bitten. Not too tuff, eh?
Stay at places with window screens (most places DO have them) or A/c -- so sleeping in a world with bugs is NOT an issue. Also not too tuff to do.
The BAD dengue--another form--happens when folks get it more than once back to back or get infected with two types at the same time. Never seen that here--yet. But planes are sprayed from the mainland, wet spots are sprayed every rainy season to prevent disease--not unlike what we had in La. On the mainland, where folks are poor and may live in a wet area is the bush with no spraying and who have no choices to move--you can see problems with this in rainy season --again a danger with children and old folks.
Still is NOT SARS--or West Nile--both of which you have to deal with stateside.
You know folks, I rarely wear bug spray--have lived here 5 years--and have never had Dengue or Malaria here. I DID get Malaria in Cozumel once--but no one even talks about the risk there????
Wonder why?
Personally, I think a bit too much is being made of too little right now--but that's just MY personal experience talking.
When we DO have an outbreak here in Honduras, I am the first one to say so--in public--on this list. (long time listers KNOW this to be true). So keep watching. We are NOT afraid to post what is going on here. You just picked the wrong time--dry season -- to be asking these questions. Right now there simply isn't the water around the island to support a mosquito! It's dry season--the island is a dust bowl! We NEED some rain!
Again, that means nothing for what things are on the other side of Micronesia.
Did you know we even have cactus growing here?
PS I have a CDC-type report of Dengue if you can read medical jargon. Basically, it says is not a big deal unless--what I said above applies.
