Hi,
No, the cell phones in Honduras do not use SIM's as far as I've seen. The ones I've used are not on the GSM standard, but rather use the same frequency and protocol that AT&T phones in the US have used for years. AT&T is starting to roll out in the US under the GSM standard.
You can read the latest news and see coverage maps for Honduras at http://www.cellular-news.com/coverage/honduras.shtml
Currently, there is no Celtel office on Roatan, so people send their phones to the mainland for activation and programming.
Personally, I like the Nokia's best. They seem to have the best reception. I also was able to increase reception by nearly double by using one of those little antennas that look like a printed circuit board like at http://www.phonemax.com/ (not promoting that site, just showing you the picture) that fit under the battery. You can get them at a cell phone shop or electronics store. I didn't think that they would help, but when I tested the phone before and after I added the antenna, I gained two bars (out of five) on the strength meter on average.
I've used the 5xxx series. The 5100 I had worked fine on Roatan. You can pick them up for a pretty decent price on www.ebay.com .
The PCS auctions will take place in January sometime. Two of the three companies bidding run wireless phone service in neighboring countries and all three seem competent, so it will be good to have an extra choice in Honduras.
