Afterbite is good, but my special remedy when I was getting bitten really bad, both sand flies and mosquitoes, was to apply lots of hydrogen peroxide to the affected areas, wait for it to dry, and then cover the same areas with calamine lotion, caladryl, etc. and let that dry. It doesn't look great, but actually I think it serves as a preventative as well as an anti-itch for hours on end--all night for sure.
