Subject: [roatan] Update on phoes here--FWD

Got this today from a freind with the latest news on phone troubles--as IF
we don't have enough of them already!!! At their request, since thier
'puter is actin' goofy today--I am forwarding it to the list.

Tried to call the ATT number from my hardline phone yesterday to make a
collect call to our bank(I rarely call stateside and use E-mail) Yep! She's
right! The call would NOT go thru! Had had this problem B4 about a year
ago and it only lasted a few days--so I didn't pay much attention until I
    got this note today.

Today the regular phone still will not call a calling card customer.

    BUT

I called from my cell phone--which is monthly billed on an account and not
on a "pay as you go" card like theirs is.

For some reason THAT still works and will take the call right to the ATT
operator without a recording. Who knows why???

So now how do you call stateside from here? I haven't a clue unless you can
afford to pay HUGE and have someone who is willing to try to figure out what
    to charge you.

French Harbor IS another spot for internet--and a better connection--but not
    as close as Oakridge.

    Forwarded from Kathy and John.

The closest for internet hook up is probably the Remax office in French
Harbour. The phone cards might be a problem. We have been using ours to
make calls to the States, but tried last week and found that Hondutel is not
allowing use of phone cards. Or we THINK that's what's happening. When we
tried to use the AT&T calling card that we've been using for months now, you
get a message from Hondutel that you can no longer use calling cards from
Honduras. An associate of ours tried their Sprint or MCI card and got the
same response. Hopefully, this will change soon. We haven't tried since
    last week.

We are visiting Roatan in May and staying at a house (guava
plantation) near Punta Blanca. I need to be able to use my laptop
for internet connection to check e-mail once in a while, and also to
call home to the U.S. to check in once in a while. Does anyone know
if we can purchase phone cards or the closest location to Punta Blanca
for calling home and for internet hook up?
