First, thanks to Steve for the open door policy. This is a nice board and I've picked-up a lot of info already. A bit of bio...We're Dave & Tina Stahl from the Cleveland area. 40's, pudgy (me, not her), non-diving floaters, beach lovers, crowd intolerant. We like accessible nightlife but don't want to stay in the midst of it. We look for locales that allow us to safely immerse ourselves into the culture. No interest in artificial, resort experiences. We're not adventure vacationers, prefering a mild hike, horseback rides, day sails. Expenditures of thousands of $ and thousands of travel miles mandate accommodations on the beach (i.e. within 30 yards or so) Tortola, BVI is my first love but we're looking to expand our horizons. Roatan, the Abacos and Belize are my chosen options. We're on our way to Roatan Jan 22 - Feb 04, 2004 to celebrate our 15th Anniv and I am pumped. Now, if I may, a question or two. (For the record, I've done several archive searches and while I did find loads of data, I could not find suitable answers to these questions) For us, staying at West Bay and grabbing water taxis to West End makes perfect sense BUT it looks like that transport shuts down around 10:00PM or so. I'd hate to cut a great night short. Walking appears to be ill advised. Are the land cabs a good option? Cost to West Bay from WE? I gather that West Bay Beach is actually made up of several beaches (i.e. Tabyana). Is this correct? Is one section/beach superior? What accommodations are at that better spot? I've seen pictures of West Bay that look VERY crowded. What's up with that?! Cruise Ship days only? Limited to specific areas only? Can I plan around the "crowd days" and hit another beach for the day? Can I get some rankings of the beaches from you folks? Looking for the combined sand, swim, snorkel experience and overall ambiance. How about on a scale from 1 - 10. West Bay/Tabyana:____ Sandy Bay:_____ Paya Beach:____ Others:_____ Thanks a bunch.
