Hi Dave & Tina and welcome to the group. First, if you have not already done so, there are two websites you might want to look at, with Roatanet.com offering some excellent accommodation choices in West Bay. Is this correct? Is one section/beach superior? West Bay & Tabyana are one in the same. The beach is one very long beautiful white stretch of sandy beach with excellent snorkeling at the far end, where the reef almost meets the shore. You will be hard pressed to find a prettier beach. There is no one spot that is better than another. >>> I've seen pictures of West Bay that look VERY crowded. Cruise Ship days only? Limited to specific areas only? Can I plan around the "crowd days" and hit another beach for the day? West Bay / Tabyana are usually very crowed on cruise ship days. If you go further down on the beach, you can avoid some of the crowd. There is a nice but smaller beach on Half Moon Bay in West End. They also cater to cruise ships but there seems to be plenty of room for everybody. Or, you might want to choose a cruise ship day to rent a car and explore the island. Paya Bay is on the East end of the island. The beach is very quiet but the water is often rough and (in my opinion) not good for snorkeling. Most people tend to choose wither West Bay or West End. Personally, I love West Bay but prefer West End and Half Moon Bay becasue it is less crowded. Last trip, our biggest thrill was seeing (3 different days) a spotted eagle ray in Half Moon Bay out near the reef. The water is not all that deep there and it was great visibility. We got some great pictures (we were snorkeling). No matter where you end up, I'm sure you'll enjoy your vacation and what Roatan has to offer.
