I had some friends using AT&T phone cards in south america who had nearly the exact same problem and were given the same reason (about calling the wrong number.) They were there on business with the company I worked for and as the secretary and billing person I had to deal with it. I had to ask for supervisors over and over and be firm about it with plenty of facts at hand to discuss with them and threats of filing complaints against them. I eventually got the bill reduced by over half though. I agree about not trusting them, but for you I would suggest doing what I did and keep requesting supervisors. Be polite but firm. They usually tape all phone conversations and bug them to review the call where you were told the 37c per minute and to prove you weren't told to call a certain 800 number for the calls. It may not get the whole charge fixed but may be able to get it reduced.
For the person with the original question and others who live down there: Do cell phones work well there? I would suggest getting a cell phone if they do and using that for calls. You can usually get decent cell phone plans which would likely cost less money and could be useful for the entire trip there and back. i was traveling to the bahamas and got a "special" number from at&t to use while there. i was told it would just cost 0.37 per minute, but i could only call my home phone number with it, not any other us number. i was happy to be able to call home at such a reasonable rate. when i got the bill i was charged over $7.00 a minute. one call to my kids was over $100.00. my bill was over $2000.00 because i was back and forth to freeport a number of times, and it spanned the end of one billing cycle, and the start of another. they refused to issue me any credit, saying that i had dialed the number incorrectly. i have an 800 number for my house, and thought that it worked the same way. it didn't. i changed from at&t because of that. then i got a bill from them after changing service for calls made 9 months prior to the billing date. i would not trust at&t at all in what they say. janice
