Subject: [roatan] prepaid phone cardLD servicelocal Roatan calls

I recently purchased a cell phone in Roatan from Cell Tell in Coxen Hole. The phone was the cheapest version at $75. Then you have to buy phone cards at least every six weeks or you loose your number. A phone card for 30 minutes is $15. That is 50 cents per minute. The purpose of the phone is to call places in Roatan from Roatan. I was told I could call the cell phone number from the US, but that doesn't work. The cell phone doesn't reach the US, I was told by Cell Tell.

Since land lines are so hard to get in Roatan, the cell phone is the solution for communication in Roatan, that is, if you don't want to go to the e-mail cafe to e-mail your local Roatan friend.

I'm still shocked to know the cost to call Roatan from Roatan is 50 cents per minute. I can call Roatan from the US for less than that. Have I missed something on this one? Those of you living there, if you don't have a land line, what's your phone solution?

This doesn't answer the question on how to call the US from Roatan, I know. Just had to ask this question while we were on the topic!

    Thanks in advance,
