Hi everyone,
Over the course of the conference's 3 days, about 54 presentations will be given. There will be 8 panels, 2 roundtables, and 3 stand- alone presentations.
Each presentation will last about 10-15 minutes. Each panel will consist of as many as 8 presentations.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is an extremely full program. We will commence each day at 7:30 am and end by 5:30 pm. Each day, we will break for lunch for an hour and a half. Throughout each day, we will work in periodic breaks so people can get up and stretch, take a walk, go to the bathroom, and get something to drink/eat.
Note, however, that the conference hall is a large, spacious and open room, with easy access to the outside. It does lend itself well to people being able to move freely. I fully expect some people will be roaming around the sides of the room looking at the literature on the exhibit tables, standing in the back having some refreshments, and generally mingling (quietly, of course).
While this will definitely be a "working" conference, it is not meant to be a "confining" one, and people should take advantage of all opportunities to network and get to know each other. There is a beautiful central plaza at the entrance of the conference center. Take advantage of it whenever you need to take a break and visit with someone.
Take advantage of the town of Copan Ruins itself. It is a small town with lots of restaurants, shops, hotels, and walkable stone streets... all wonderful places to stop and talk to people.
The presentations themselves are only 50% of the value of the conference. The remaining 50% is in the relationships that people establish. In fact, the presentations are meant to be the primary means for helping develop these relationships. The presentations should provide ideas, models for how to better help the people of Honduras. They should also facilitate introductions.
I encourage all conferees to bring their business cards, brochures about their organizations, literature and photos of their projects... and a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm. Get a a good night's sleep each evening, drink plenty of bottled water each day, and lay off the sugar and alcohol as much as possible... You know, good common sense stuff.
If you have any questions or concerns during the conference, there will be a "Response Team" available. Team members will probably have some sort of ribbon attached to their nametag.
I will be on the Response Team, as will my wife, Barbara, and my partner Sandra Romero de Thompson of Special Missions Foundation. Catherine Docter of the Copan Maya Foundation has also offered to volunteer. There will be others.
Thanks, Marco
