I'm allergic to all insect venom. I smear on 100% deet (not Off, it's not 100%) as a protective. I know others don't want to use it, but I'm allergic and I am guaranteed to be by far the biggest bite magnet in any group. I get countless bites anyway. I take copious quantities of benedryl for the itching, smear on hydrocortisone ointment (ointment stays on me longer than the cream), and try my darnedest not to scratch (when I touch the ointment I feel it better than the soaked-in cream and am reminded not to scratch). If I do swell up from the venom, I need to take steroids to combat the allergic reaction. I ended up taking steroids when we were on Roatan in June. One night on West Bay I woke up tearing my left arm apart. It became the comparison area to the rest of my body that I did not scratch. I never scratched the left arm again, but it remained bothersome for weeks after we left the islands. My learning was to increase my protective routine and absolutely, positively, no matter what, not scratch. But I'm allergic. Others may not want any part of my routine. However, for me, it allows me to go places such as Roatan and thoroughly, absolutely, totally enjoy every moment of experience. Is there anything you can put on the sand flea bits. Mine seem to just be getting worse instaed of better with time?
