There ya go. This gius is telling you straight.

Also add that interest and merchant fees are MUCH higher here than
stateside--as are the number of billing mistakes which can be VERY hard to
clear up with language barriers for some and no phones at times.

Again we're back to the "you aren't from here" stuff. Here you have no
credit record unless you've been here long enough to make one with your bank
by putting in lots of money and keeeping it there. And add being a legal
resident here for years--by which time you've paid in cash for so long
you've forgotten why you ever thought you needed this in the first place.

When we do want to use credit we use our USA cards--set up to bank draft
payments or as debit cards since we have no mail. Works better since we keep
most big cash in USA banks to begin with.

Once Banc Cresar failed here on Roatan folks decided that keeping tons of
money in local banks maybe wasn't such a good idea. Yes, we got most of the
money back (not all CD's, but all checking and savings), but it took more
than a month to do it!!! While no one had ANY money and everyone on the
island was scared to take ANY checks or work with anyone!

Also most checking type accts are cash held in Lempira unless you make a
largish deposit and hold it there--which devalues at a rate of about 10% a
    year while it sits.

Also, credit cards are not as widely used here--or liked since they charge
the merchant a fee which he either has to eat or pass on to you--one
costs--the other is a pain in the butt to do books on. They have to use a
phone line to scan a card thru to verify payment until they get to know you.
Phone lines? Working constantly? Here? Surely you jest!

Ever consider just carrying a bit of cash?????? Beats paying service
charges and worrying with bills without phones any day! And, after awhile,
you really DO get used to the idea.

I've got a friend living in La Ceiba who is using his Visa
Credit/Debit card to access his bank acount in the USA through Banco
Atlántida. I don't know whether you can do the same thing with BGA
(formerly Banchasa) or what the service charges are. My understanding
is that to get any local credit or debit cards you have to have
    residency and local credit references.
