Mr. Crampton:
I am a beach front resort property owner in La Ceiba and a real
estate attorney who has represented investment buyers in Southwest
Florida for over twenty years. The bottom line is, if you have doubts
don't buy it. Roatan is an estranged part of Honduras but is still
governed by the same Consitution (contrary legislation
notwithstanding) which prohibits foreign ownership of land within 40
kilometers of a national boundary and the coast. If your investment
is not throw away money put it in the bank, visit the island as a
renter and let some other landlord deal with it. Your can't count on
rentals covering your expenses. If you can't easily manage the
expense (which you can figure you've underestimated by at least 50
percent) don't buy it. If you're not absolutely positively in love
with Roatan (keeping in mind you'll never vacation anywhere else
again once you own this property) don't buy it.
If on the other hand you really love Honduras as I do, the relaxed
atmosphere, the great people and the incomparable surroundings, go
for it, enjoy it and don't look back.
