Hi.. I wanted to reply to those folks who were concerned about safety and expense in Roatan. My husband and I were there in June and had the most incredible vacation that we could ever imagine. We stayed at Las Rocas and fished, snorkeled (we arent divers), explored the island, and just had an all around great time. We NEVER felt unsafe, and I really think that we went everywhere. Our 11 night stay was around $700. It was in the off season though.
That rate is MUCH less than we would pay to go to the coast here in Oregon. As for food, it was fabulous. We never had a bad meal. IT was more expensive than what we paid in Bocas (in Panama), but comparable with the prices that we paid in Belize and the resort areas of Mexico. We simply can't get all you can eat lobster dinner here in Oregon for the price that we paid at Hole In The Wall, and the Argentinian Grill's food was excellent...oh yes, and the peanut butter shrimp at Pinochios...I'm salivating just remembering.
So, maybe it has a little to do with where you are from and what you are expecting??
As for the bugs...spray! That is what we do when we go camping here in Oregon. If you think it will be a big deal for you, it probably will. We learned to reapply the spray more often in Roatan and did get bites, but based upon what I read before going, I thought I was going to itch myself to death. Believe me, it is a very small price to pay to spend time in paradise...
It's all about what you focus on...I can't wait to go back in January...
