Hi Folks -
I'm become convinced that my greatest concerns for our upcomming visit (Jan-Feb, 2004) are choosing a place to stay and the bugs.
A very common theme in many, many posts are the voracious bugs. The sheer quantity of comments on the topic have convinced me that this is a very real issue. It actually seems like the mosquitos are of a secondary concern having been outdone by the low-to-the-ground carnivores.
I'm used to no-see-ums that appear beachside at dusk & dawn but it seems like the Roatan predators do not adhear to such protocols and feed constantly day & night. Even mid-day while you're sunning on the beach?? Is this accurate?
It also appears that they do not confine their activities to the beach and may actually invade your abode?!? I expect mosquitos everywhere but the others, too?!?
Surely you ex-pats and locals don't experience this assault on a daily basis...do you? What's your secret? Come on...I won't tell. Is there an area of the island that is not effected where you all really live?
I'm coming anyway but I'm just looking to establish realistic expectations and prepare accordingly (physically and emotionally). The typical "bathe in 100% DEET every 5 minutes" solution isn't exactly inspiring. Some plain speak, direct responses to my concerns would really be appreciated.
Thanks gang Dave
