| | Subject: | [roatan] The continuing saga of a Roatan tropical fish slurper
|
Dear Group,
A friend of mine sent me the below email. It's a first hand account of him witnessing someone trying to take fish back to the US on Sunday. I'm not sure if it refers to the same person who was on this list. Let's hope the fish made it back to the water.
Best regards, Steve www.roatanet.com - Visitors Guide to Roatan and the Bay Islands www.travel-to-honduras.com - Your Travel Guide to Honduras Forwarded message:
I had read the exchanges from and regarding the man who wanted to slurp up tiny tropical fish to take them to the US. It is amazing in this day and age anyone could be so... Obviously, if everyone could do this, the fish population would be fairly damaged on Roatan. It's like the people who wanted to take just one cactus or one pine tree for Christmas from the forest or just one petrified rock or one Indian pottery.
I remember years ago seeing these little fish all around docks and in grass and around mangroves and now they are somewhat rare.
Anyway, I was flying to the US on Sunday and saw this gringo type checking in taped boxes---which is a bit unusual. Then he boarded the TACA plane and within a few minutes a TACA official came on board to escort him off. His companions began to speculate about what was going to happen to him and talked about the live "things" he had in the boxes and it would have been better off if he had carried them on board to put the pressurized cabin with him. They also suggested he had done this three years ago. I just began to suspect this was the "fishnapper" from the web. Anyway, he was able to get back on board TACA, after his fish were confiscated. He repeated for about twenty minutes how "bummed" he was that they took his fish. I thought how lucky he was that he still got on the plane without a fine and didn't have to face the wrathe of the US customs people for bringing in nonpermitted exotic fish.
Just thought you might like to know. If you want to select and summarize any of it for the public on line, feel free to do so.
PS. The guy looked quite sad going through US customs with only his plastic slurpy gun.
