We become immune after 6 weeks or so. I was pox ridden for about 8 weeks--then--magically--they vanished! Go figure! They still bite me and it stings, but only itch for a minute with no spots afterwards.
Also we learn places they are heavy and don't go there--or spray legs well and often with Deep Woods Off if we must go these places. Worst times are sunrise and sundown for all bugs. At those times we stay behind screens in bad areas. Typical bad areas are calm water bays with no breeze and swampy areas.
Another trick? Sandflies can't fly in strong breeze. The literally get blown away! Staying in spots with a good breeze also helps. The south shore is one of these places--which is why we built there. We also rake our beach daily to kill eggs in the sun and spray eco-safe stuff for them on the sand regularily so our guests (and US) have far fewer problems. It's a hassle--and costs us some $$, but our guests think it's worth it!!!!
