Well, I've been sitting back and observing the conversations in this
forum for about four or five months now, and like many I was
impressed with the helpful nature and friendly advice that was freely
given to those of us that have begun to discover, but have yet to
actually visit the Bay Islands. For me it was an educational process
that just seemed to get better and more exciting with each day and
for that I want to thank all of the regular contributors. My wife and
myself are/were seriously contemplating a trip in July or August
(have to see how the tax man treats me before I can firm anything up)
and it seemed that the only real decision left was exactly when and
where? Coral Beach Inn – I really think we would enjoy meeting Sandy
and Waylon, I certainly enjoy her posts. Bananarama – It sounds like
Ron has a very nice place and though we are not divers ……. maybe it's
time to try it out. Also we must see West Bay beach and visit the
West End, we like to party too! Maybe Judy's Fantasea in Sandy Bay
for some seclusion, relaxation, and romantic sunsets. I'm not sure
how or if we will make the right choice but we definitely want to
stay with one or more of the folks that have taken their valuable
time to contribute to this forum and discover for ourselves the
island that many refer to as paradise. Could we – two fortysomethings
really buy a small piece of property on an unspoiled Caribbean
island? Could we possibly hope to actually someday retire, at least
part time, in paradise? Can this dream really come true? It all
seemed amazingly within reach but now I see all of the recent posts
on the escalating crime problem on Roatan. Where did all of
the "friendly locals" go? I wouldn't be so concerned if we were
talking the petty thief or pick pocket but these stories of masked
gangs with guns is down right scary. When the people that live there
are arming themselves for protection (not an option when you are a
tourist), and talking about a drug related crime wave with the
authorities generally uninterested in confronting it…….. I have to
ask myself is this really where I want to spend my vacation, let
alone invest some money? Is there a future left in Roatan? Last
evening after reading the latest group of posts my wife flat out said
she would not go - "Let's go back to the all inclusive in Mexico, I
felt safe there" were her words. I don't want to over react and yes I
know "crime is everywhere" but there is a definite sense in these
posts that this situation is different for Roatan and escalating
quickly. Rape and murder are not to be taken lightly. Is Paradise
    really lost?
