    Halli,

I have been to Roatan five times over the past two years, with the most
recent being this past November. I take all of the standard precautions
that I would take when travelling abroad and have always felt safe. To be
fair, I pretty much stay in the West Bay area and am pleased with the
increased patrolling done by the Tourist Police. Most of the resorts in
that area are very concerned about the security of their guests and do have
at least one security guard present from evening until morning. Again, that
is in the West Bay area. I am not familiar with other parts of the island.

I cannot put myself in the place of anyone who lives on Roatan permanently
and has had to deal with this kind of unfortunate tragedy. You of course
must make whatever decision is best for you, your friends, and family. For
me personally, I love Roatan and will continue to return. I feel that the
best way I can show my support as a tourist is to continue to come and
contribute to the economy in whatever way I can. I have stayed at three
different resorts (Las Rocas, Fosters, and Bananarama) and I can tell you
that each of these places will do what it can on behalf of its guests to
make their stays pleasant. There are also groups such as CANATURH that work
to promote tourism on the island who are, I'm sure, going to speak up about
    this problem.

Again, I am a tourist, not a resident and I only stay at most a few weeks at
a time. I am not trying to gloss over this. I acknowledge the severity of
the matter but I believe that Roatan is a real gem.

    Best,

    Jeff Levine

    Hi!
I have been following the Roatan message board for the past year.
Besides the mention of petty theft I am shocked to have learned about
the recent crimes occurring on Roatan. I spent March 2004 on Roatan
and had one of the best and safest vacations of my life. There is
not one complaint that I could tell you about. In fact I had such a
great time I have decided to come back again this March. But now I
am a bit concerned, should I be? I completely understand that
nothing is ever the same from one day to another however is this
really as serious as it sounds from the message board. Those of you
who in my opinion are so fortunate to have a beautiful island to live
on, would you spend your vacation on Roatan or would you make other
    plans?
    Thanks!
    Halli
