Dear Ron, I would much rather live here than DC with all it's crime. I have lived here for over seven years and love it.I have always felt that part of the problem has been the lack of security on the incoming ferry boat. They can come over from the mainland fairly cheaply and no one checks for knives or arms. People should be checked the same as they do at the airports. Do come and visit our island. It's still beautiful despite everything. Lucy Joyce

Ron,
I wonder about the same thing sometimes, I live in Washington DC, where at the same time as a couple of these incidents, there were a few murders, "home invasions," and numerous fatal car accidents, etc. Not to belittle either place's incidents as being more or less serious. When I hear of a person being robbed or murdered in Roatan, I am scared and appalled. When I hear of a person being robbed or murdered here I barely take notice. Why is that? Even when the incidents here in DC are way more often (reportedly) and closer geographically. I think that the smallness of the community there plays a role in people getting more easily "freaked out." Chances are you at least know a person who knows the person that was robbed. It makes it a lot more scary. I'd like to know which area is statistically safer...DC or Roatan. Just a thought.
