Dear Forum,
We deeply regret the series of criminal incidents that have happened around our Island recently. As a long time residents and members of an Organization dedicated to promote Tourism on the Island, let us just say a few things:
1. We understand your situation perfectly well. It is always our desire to promote and at the same time cover the necessities of the Island. That is why we helped bring the Tourist Police to Roatan back in 2003. It has been a long and hard couple of years for them to adapt to this environment, specially, when they lack the necessities to do their job. The Tourist Police was designed to be in the most affluent tourist areas. The Preventiva Police--Policia Nacional Preventiva--- is designed to cover the other areas and help prevent crimes. Unfortunately, they also lack the basic equipment like: patrol cars, radios, etc. Our Government determines that the areas of Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and other cities are the ones that have more violent crimes, therefore their Security budget is concentrated on those cities. Also the Private Sector in these cities donate a lot of money to the Policia Nacional Preventiva to get protection from the criminals. Our country is poor, our Government is poor but they try to do the best they can with what they have. I am not defending them in not providing for Roatan and the Bay Islands more budget but I think we should supplement more ourselves if we want to have more security on our streets, on our roads and around our neighborhoods.
2. All your emails have been shared with the entities of the Government. In this case, the Ministry of Tourism, the Honduras Tourist Police and the Ministry of Security. The representatives of these entities have responded to my forwarded emails and they have the following to say: The Ministry of Tourism is sending a letter to the Ministry of Security to call for a meeting with the local authorities of the Island. Another letter will also have to be sent from CANATURH-BAY ISLANDS to request that such meeting takes place in Roatan.
3. The Municipality of Roatan has bought three (3) patrol cars (4-dr. sedans) for the Roatan Police. The only thing pending to get these cars to Roatan is the dispensa for the taxes and painting of the cars.
4. CANATURH-BAY ISLANDS is in the process of buying three (3) motorcycles for the Roatan Tourist Police and the Roatan Policia Preventiva. These funds were the result of a benefit celebrated to buy them a car, unfortunately we couldn't raise more than $3,000.00 and so the Police have requested we provide them with motorcycles since the Municipality has given them the cars.
5. Last, our Board of Directors has taken the attention of all your emails and a meeting will be held on Monday, February 28th at 4:00 p.m. in the VIP Room of the Roatan Airport to discuss the Security Issue of Roatan. This is the time when we have our regular weekly meetings in which we always have Security Updates. We welcome all concerned Roatan residents to this meeting so we can work together to help solve this serious situation.
Best Regards,
