Bruce/dke and all other interesteds =E2=80=93

The group I am involved with is in the planning stages of developing a
cutting-edge arts and ecology center where creative, sustainable living
projects can be fostered and made available to local communities in a
    peaceful environment.

An integral part of the overall strategy is to experiment with and build
small proto-types of habitable structures which utilize innovative and =
    /or
    alternative, low-cost materials and methods.

Because of the commitment to =E2=80=98sustainability=E2=80=99 ( which we =
    accept as meaning
=E2=80=98meeting current needs without undermining the needs of future =
    generations
to meet their needs=E2=80=99) we are particularly interested in working =
    with local
renewable materials. Eg, clay, mud-brick, straw/strawbale/ bamboo etc.

Luckily, we have collected a group of experts in each form and persuaded
them to prepare a proto-type/ build/advise etc etc. Hopefully we will be
able to do workshops and all will be invited. Of course I am getting a =
    bit
ahead of myself here as it is my charge to go out and find the =
    appropriate
land /place etc. Hence I am looking at many areas in Central America. I
have talked to some of you off list about this.

I must say that I have read with interest the group comments about
difficulties etc about living/working/doing business on Roatan, Costa R
and others. I live on the Eastern end of Long Island (NY) and have
encountered just as many difficulties. For example, It is horrendously
expensive, though inexplicably, wages are generally low. Doesn=E2=80=99t =
    matter
how many degrees one has. The building rules are insanely tight, you =
    can=E2=80=99t
build a deck on your house even if every single other place in the
neighborhood has one..Except of course unless you go through variance-
takes about two years and costs.
And forget anything experimental..just a flat NO to that.
Of course you can walk the streets at night, but no-one does. And
telecommunications are plentiful but it costs. Also energy costs- =
    heating,
electricity etc for a single family house are running at between =
    $300-500
a month out here at the moment.
It is also V conservative and not exactly Diversity central.

So there you go- horses for courses.

If anyone is interested in this, do yell out and I will look you up when =
    I
get down there in the next few months.
    Thanks for the time.
