    Hi Nancy,

Just saw your message and was hoping I could attend but probably can't. I do think, though, that this is a great idea.

I think the best approach is to work closely with the islanders, who also suffer from all of this, and talk with whatever law enforcement people we can. It doesn't seem like anyone wants to ignore the problem.

There are lots of people who have lived here all their lives who have just as much, probably more, to lose than we do. They also probably have more of a grasp of what is really going on - they are, obviously, much more in tune with long-standing cultural issues than we are and I think they need to be a big part of any effort to turn things around. I have more faith in their judgement about these things than I do my own.

I also think it wouldn't do any harm to sort of persistently nudge the American Embassy and any other official US agency that is involved in Honduran affairs to keep the problem on somebody's front burner. The US and Honduras have enough going on politically to pay at least some attention to trouble in paradise. The same might also be true of Canada, or even Great Britain - I just don't know much about their relationship with Honduras so maybe some of their ex-pats could chime in there.

If we established a small, semi-formal group of concerned people who really pushed the issue without being unduly militant or aggressive, we might make some headway. I would think it would be very worthwhile to include some islanders and maybe a law enforcement representative or two as well. It seems that an us-vs-them scenario would only add to the tension.

This is, after all, a problem that is depressingly evident all over the world. I feel just as safe here as I do in my beloved Boston - drugs, crime, drugs, poverty, drugs - there's nothing new under the sun.

I'm sure I'm not alone in thanking you for jumping in and doing everything you are to address the problem. We all have plenty to say about everything but you make things happen. Nice going.
