I agree, comparing Roatan with DC is ridiculous. I actually am not the one who made the comparison, just illustrating that people may want to do some research before they make such assertions. I got the numbers from the links that I provided on the original post. According to the only numbers I can find,"please provide links if you have better numbers" Getting murdered in Roatan in 2002 was almost twice as likely as in DC. Making comparisons like that, especially when it turns out that you're totally wrong does not help improve security.
Glad to see many are taking the issue seriously. I think improving security now will pay unbelievable dividends later. It also would be nice to see the police change their image, Five 12 guage and machine gun totting guys in the back of a beat up pick up wearing rumpled up uniforms does very little to inspire professionalism among the police and it sure as hell is not comforting to tourists, or most residents I would guess. You would think some of the bigger players on the island would make some serious donations to this cause, in the end they will also reap the biggest rewards.
Maybe some sort of organization like the "Fraternal Order of Police" could be formed. It may be a good way to solicit donations for new equipment, radios, maybe vehicles and training too. I doubt Tegus will do much, this would probably have to be a local thing. Anyway, I wish you all the best, the island sure has a lot of potential and I think improving security will translate to huge rewards later. --- In roatan.....com, "duhhbeach" wrote: > > > Comparing Roatan To DC is ridiculous! > > I lived on Roatan for almost a year in 2002-03, I don't know where > you got your information or statistics on Roatan, but I lived & > worked there and never once did I feel threatened or unsafe! > Whether I was in West End or Coxen Hole, I never had any trouble in > any way shape or form.
