Matt--excellent commentary and so eye-opening and now obviously true. How many were there at the meeting? And how do they go about implementing your suggestions? What is needed? Any thoughts?

The meeting of yesterday PM I would like to think was positive in as much as
an eye opener as to how many ex-pats are culturally totally unaware of the
community in which they live in.I don't mean this disparagingly. Westerners
by nature are benevolently inclined towards those less fortunate or less
educated but are caught up in their expat cliques and activities that they
tend not to be aware of the social ills of the community in which they live
through lack of exposure. These social ills are those that are creating the
crime. How many expats living on Roatan take the time to read each day the
local newspaper to find out what is going on in the government , security ,
    economy , budget issues etc?

Honduran mainland news is our news and what goes on over there affects us
despite what the myth says " the mainland is another country " This was
perhaps true to a certain extent 10 years ago but no longer. Drug and gang
related violence on Roatan is spilling over from the coast. President
Maduro's government has made sweeping changes but as Jerry said last night
there is still a long way to go.Becoming a Freeport would be an excellent
step towards Roatan gaining some autonomy to be able to try and maneg crime
.This is an excellent long term solution. Throwing money at a problem is
like patching up an old car that needs fixing , you'll keep doing it
forever. The meeting was positive but not much came out of it. I have never
attended a CANATURH meeting but am now heartened to become a member and make
an effort to work towards a more secure community if not as Sara said
yesterday a legacy for my kids.I suggest that CANATURH set up a security
sub-committee that is comprised of current members ( preferably with
security and social background ) that will continue to be aware of problems
, work with local police and municipal figures to find solutions and follow
up on ideas otherwise there will be meeting after meeting that accomplish
    little.
