OK, regarding AMEX or any brand traveler's checks: for about the last 6 months, the local banks there on Roatan will credit the traveler's checks into the merchant's account, so the money is there. However, those banks will not allow the merchant to withdraw or use that money until those traveler's checks are cleared and proven authentic and not stolen. This usually actually takes about 10 days, however, to be sure and allow for slow island mail, etc. and have use of the "float," the banks make the time period of 30 days before the merchant who took the traveler's check can actually have use of that money. See why it is hard to cash them if the merchant does not know you?? And also see why merchants do not want larger than $20 in traveler's checks?

Once we know, we understand. Bring some cash, but guard it carefully, and bring low denomination traveler checks. And use at merchants that know you. Stolen ID's are prevalent, so the merchants really are taking a chance if they do not know you. AMEX or Visa, etc. will only reimburse the holder of the traveler check if reported stolen. They will not reimburse the merchant who took the stolen check.

Also, the bigger the merchant or the more cash they have, the more likely they are to cash the traveler's checks as they have more excess cash in the bank so they can wait for 30 days for the money to clear.

Also, best to cash the traveler's checks at the bank (and stand in the long lines if it is a payday), but the banks will only cash up to $100 per day unless you have an account at that bank. This is because they do not want to run out of money for others. Seriously.

Hope this helps and that is as accurate as I think it is from whom I heard it!

    Tony,

Bring plenty of money for meals as the prices have
gone up in the last year or two. AMEX T-Checks are no
problem getting cashed at West End. Take a taxi but
arrange for it the night before. The taxicab drivers
are very reliable when they have a preset appointment.

One last thing, try not to carry too much cash on your
    person.
