Here's is my 2 cents on the crime problem in Roatan.

If you are anyone but a native born person in Roatan and own anything, you
will eventually be looking for thieves. The problem is the foreign community
is taken advantage of in Roatan. If you are a foreigner, you are considered
rich so why should we help you. They (Honduras Government) love the money
you invest to keep our people working; they love you coming here to vacation,
but if we have to help you, forget it. Your foreign, your rich, so to hell
with you. Point is if you can't handle your own problems in Roatan, forget
    getting help from anyone.

Roatan is a very third world island with no one looking out for the rights
of their own people much less the rights of foreign ex-pats. Let a few more
robberies happen and make the news or let someone get killed for a few dollars
and all this can go away. Nothing hurts property value's or business like a
    few dead Americans.
