Everyone, I've been watching all the discussion about these security problems and as a property owner in Roatan I'm very disturbed. I hear a lot of talk about how nice and friendly the locals are, but I don't think laughing in every Gringos face who has a fallen victim to thugs and thiefs "friendly". I had every intention of building a vacation home there for my family in the near future, and I can assure you this project has been put off "until further notice".
Until I feel confident that my property will be protected by the authorities on the island, I do not feel confortable investing more money than I have already. I think it's safe to assume that if I'm thinking this way, many other people who have fallen in love with the island feel the same way. This translates into a situation that is far from funny for people who rely on the gringo gravy train for subsistence. As long as the police laugh at us and locals ignore our security needs, gringos are not going to reward them with dollars and investments.
