Dear Group,
Hello, I am the moderator of this group. Over the past few weeks, discussion on the group has focused on some recent crimes in Roatan. Many messages have been posted from concerned residents in Roatan, investors and visitors.
Currently this group has over 1,400 members and its aim is to offer information on Roatan, everything from visitor information to investor and relocation information. Within some simple guidelines, it is an open forum. This means at times we see the good and the bad, which is the way it should be. This group works best when it is used as a means of creating awareness on issues in Roatan and in bringing everyone together on those issues.
At the recent meeting held by Canaturh in Roatan, a lot was discussed and I hope everyone took away something from it. One of the main topics discussed was how can people help? What is needed to help in this case – with the police force in Roatan? Various possibilities were discussed. One that I think has merit is to make it possible for donations to be given to assist the police, though this is not the long-term solution. Although, just giving money is never the solution anywhere, I believe for the moment this would be a step in the right direction.
Some recent post have mentioned how many people, myself included, do not completely understand the situation in Roatan with the police, local government, national government and the problems that the average Honduras live with every day of their lives. This is a large issue. Many people come to Roatan to live or visit but it is very difficult as an outsider to understand the intricacies of the Honduran system and the difficulties the Honduran people face. I believe it is everyone's responsibility when you decide to visit, live or invest in a foreign country to learn as much as possible about the local way of life. This is also part of what attracts people to travel and relocate for their adventure in the tropics.
Many people have mentioned they are willing to help in some way and I believe we all can. Canaturh offers a variety of membership options which enable a person to contribute financially toward planning the development of Roatan. Also as a member, you receive news on what is happening in Roatan and what are the current issues they are working on. http://www.canaturh-bayislands.org/ http://www.canaturh-bayislands.org/become.htm
I believe a couple of board members from Canaturh belong to this discussion list. I invite them to post a message concerning their goals, issues they have addressed in the past few months, member benefits, and how their budget is spent? From there everyone can make there own opinion on whether to actually get involved with Canaturh and to help out.
>From my limited experience I believe Canaturh addresses many issues that come up on this group regularly, including building restrictions, land development, water taxis, traffic, bugs and many more. At the moment it is crime that is the focus of the group. In a month's time it will be something else relevant to Roatan. It is time maybe we all took a more active part in the improvement of Roatan instead of just debating the problems and issues, as this solves nothing. There is a solution for everything and with enough people involved the solution can be found. But if no one is willing to get involved and just care to debate when something goes wrong - maybe there is no future in Roatan.
As a person who has lived in Roatan and in San Pedro Sula for over 6 years, I have always tried to get involved and to learn more about Honduras. I've also tried to understand the reasons behind problems when they arise, since there is always a reason.
I hope someone from Canaturh will respond to this message and that everyone who has spoken about helping decides to get involved. I plan to do so.
Best Regards Dean Milverton
