Hey Sam - Come on down! Late April is usually still a good in-between
season temperature-wise and, as an avid diver, you must know that the
reefs are not to be missed.

I've lived here for going on 9 years and, in all that time, my car
was broken into once (because I made the mistake of leaving a pair of
pants -- with empty pockets -- on the seat while swimming) and I was
once threatened by a nearby family with an alcohol-deranged patriarch
who mistakenly thought he owned land that I purchased. (God save us
    from a-holes everywhere.)

There is no crime wave here, Sam. There's only been a wave of
discussion about the kinds of recent crime that -- if not discussed
and addressed -- could easily get out of hand in a growing resort
area ANYWHERE. This is not meant to dismiss the great trauma that
accompanied some incidents; it's just that those incidents are not
    rampant.

I suppose the phenomenon is not unlike reading the newspapers and
watching the news every day in the States and ending up feeling that
the criminals are taking over when, in fact, you may not even know
anyone who has been a recent victim. Frankly, if I were not a
subscriber, I would not know about most of the incidents reported in
this forum. That's despite the fact that I hang out regularly in a
number of places where there always seems to be a fair amount of
scuttlebutt circulating. It's not there's nobody in those places who
know of these incidents. It's just that it's not on everyone's mind,
as it would be if the problem was anything like rampant.

My advice? Take the normal precautions you would anywhere to avoid
setting yourself up as a victim and you will always minimize your
risk: don't flash cash and expensive items; don't become a closing-
time regular at notorious drinking holes; take reasonable precautions
to secure your stuff; and don't feel you have to stand up to any jerk
    who stumbles into your face.

Women should use common sense concerning place and company and not
let the "paradise" atmosphere lull them into thinking they're not
still living in the real world. Just because the water's great
doesn't mean there ain't no sharks out there.

Your going to love it. Have a great stay, Tom

Roatan for late April. I have to admit that my hopes for a great
vacation have been somewhat overshadowed by the constant stream of
emails about crime. Certainly I want to know that it is good to be
cautious when traveling, but I'm getting the impression that I'm
headed for trouble. If the criminals don't get me, the bugs will!

back over and over again and even buy property and move there. So I
would love to hear from those of you who are repeat visitors or
residents and help me to anticipate reasons why I will enjoy my visit
    too.

visit since I am an avid diver.
