Sam, My first trip tp Roatan was over 5 years ago on a cruise, and we did 2 dives there and they were so amazing that we returned 6 months later to do a dive trip. While there we bought a condo, and then another one, and have been going to Roatan alot since. Last Feb. my husband, son and myself opened a gift shop there in Coxen hole, "So Tropic". I ended up living there for over 7 months last year getting my store going. I lived alone most of that time, and I never felt afraid or threatened. I know that there is some crime in Roatan, but there is crime everywhere you go, and I think we just all want to get a handle on it, and get involved before it gets any worse. But by NO means is it so bad or out of hand that people shouldn't come and visit this beautiful island. The general tourist places that you will most likely be visiting are all relatively safe, and I personally have never had any problems. Just be cautious, as others have advised you and don't flash alot of money around or go out alone at night etc. There are alot of great dives in Roatan to do, it depends on where you are staying, as to what dive sites to see. You can't go wrong, as they are all great, and the bugs aren't so bad if you wear repellent of some kind. Sunscreen with insect repellent in the day, and off with deet at night is what I use. Go to Roatan, dive alot and have a great time, and don't worry, you'll love it there. The shark dive is fun, and so is the dolphin dive at Anthony's Key Resort. Judy - So Tropic
