    Sam,
You will have a great time on the Island. I have been going there with my
family for 3 years now and have never felt like I had put them in harms way.
I actually feel less threatened there with my son ( 9) and daughter (8) than
anyplace I have taken them and I have been dragging them around to foreign
countries since they were babies. I travel to Roatan at least 5 times a year
to work on a project I am doing on the east end in Camp Bay and my wife and
children always come for about six weeks in the summer. I will actually be
there when you are and I DO NOT feel the least bit worried about going
    because of recent events.

If I were planning on making my first trip to Roatan knowing what I know
about the place as well as the people I would not think twice about it. I
live in Florida and have done my best to shelter my children from the
criminal elements that they are surely to come into contact with living here
and while I am on Roatan I get to just enjoy them not worrying about is
someone going to target them. I have purchased property there and feel as
secure about that investment as I do with any other one I have in the
    States.

So, Sam (and anyone else considering) take your trip and enjoy the beautiful
people of this very unique Island and delight in what I believe is some of
the worlds best diving. Invest if you are looking for what will probably be
one of the last great Caribbean investment opportunities and feel secure in
doing so. I have to say that in going to Roatan and, trying to accomplish
what I am, I have found myself in some really off the main path areas and I
have never at anytime ,night or day, felt unsafe. But I have always treated
the Islanders with respect. I am not saying that Roatan does not have its
fair share of issues but in comparison they are in my opinion eclipsed by
the enjoyment and beauty that Roatan has to offer. As for a good dive shop
and great diving you will get that at a very reasonable price from nearly
any on the Island and yes bring some bug spray just like you would need if
    you were to visit Florida.

    Good Luck and Enjoy,
    Michael Bracewell

    > I am new to this list and have recently booked my first trip to Roatan for
late April. I have to admit that my hopes for a great vacation have been
somewhat overshadowed by the constant stream of emails about crime.
Certainly I want to know that it is good to be cautious when traveling, but
I'm getting the impression that I'm headed for trouble. If the criminals
don't get me, the bugs will!

over and over again and even buy property and move there. So I would love
to hear from those of you who are repeat visitors or residents and help me
to anticipate reasons why I will enjoy my visit too.
    > I would specifically love some recommendations of dive sites to visit
since I am an avid diver.
