John - It is about a 20 minute drive from downtown to the airport, worse at rush hour. You may consider a quick trip to the Museum of Anthropology and History or to the Guamilito Market. Those long layovers are tough in San Pedro Sula as there's no place to store your stuff at the airport so you have to take it with you and keep up with it. Be wary in the city if you go and take note that it will be getting dark fast areound 5:30 pm.
